The Modern Interior Design Process
Modern interior design is a very fragmented industry. The personal nature of the work means there are few large modern interior design firms established – most businesses are single operators or small teams. However, there is a lot of unity in the way that they work. Most modern interior designers follow something like the process described below when they are on a job.
The design process
When working with clients, modern interior designers follow a fairly well-established pattern:
- The client completes a design brief, which outlines the objectives for the space, the number and type of users, the timeframe for the project and the budget.
- You provide an interior designing fee proposal, which outlines the tasks you’ll undertake and each of the associated costs.
- The client indicates whether the modern interior decorator will be project managing the entire interior designing job, or working with other client-specified contractors.
- Detailed working drawings are created which show the existing space
- Detailed design drawings are created. This part of the modern interior design process is done in conjunction with the consulting architect.
- The drawings may be reviewed by the client many times before they are approved. You would need to indicate how revisions to the interior designing are charged in your proposal.
- A schedule is created, which specifies which parts of the work are carried out in which order. Modern interior decorator would usually consult with the contractors to create this schedule.
- You liaise with architects and contractors to actually build the space. Many modern interior decorators do a portion of the hands-on work themselves.
